So Energy are the first supplier I’ve seen in weeks offering a decent fixed rate tariff!
So Energy are now offering a tariff at £1,666 per year for a medium-usage household, the So Aspen Two Year – Green. With the Price Cap expected to go up to £1,823 from 1 April, with further increases predicted for July and October this year, you can easily save more than £150 on your energy bill over the next 12 months. This tariff offered by So Energy is a 2 year fixed, so you’ll be locked in for 24 months. While the expectation is that the price cap will be much higher than this £1,666 for the next 10 months, there is no guarantee of what the future will hold, so fair warning that the price cap might fall below £1,666 next year (although I doubt it) but on this tariff you’ll still be paying the £1,666 regardless of what the cap does. As I said, I doubt this will happen but I do feel a duty to give fair warning on this possibility.

Ofgem Price Cap Predictions
The Ofgem Price Cap changes every 3 months. Currently, around 80-85% of the country pay Price Cap rates, which is awful considering less than 50% of the country were on the price cap back in 2021. What this means is that your prices will change every 3 months, in-line with the Price Cap. Almost always, the cap is more expensive than a fixed rate tariff.
The January-March 2025 price cap is set at £1,738 for a household that uses 2,700 kWh of electricity per year and 11,500 kWh of gas per year. These are all indicative figures, the actual “caps” are on the gas and electricity standing charges and unit rates, the £1,738 is just used for comparison purposes and is not the maximum you can be charged, in other words if you use more energy, you will be charged more, if you use less then you will be charged less. Here are the current caps:
Gas standing charge: 31.65p per day
Gas unit rate: 6.34p per kWh
Electricity standing charge 60.97p per day
Electricity unit rate: 24.86p per kWh
Now unfortunately, even these figures are indicative. The UK is split into 14 different electricity regions and 8 different gas regions, each region having its own separate price cap for standing charges and unit rates, meaning that the above rates are actually an average of the rates across all regions.
The announcement for the April to July 2025 price cap will be tomorrow, 25 February 2025, and energy experts Cornwall Insight are predicting an increase to £1,823, a roughly 5% increase.
Whilst Cornwall Insight haven’t given a prediction for July 2025 as of yet, more other experts are predicting two further increases in the price cap this year, once in July and once in October. This means we may see prices edge toward the £2,000 mark again.
This is why moving to a fixed rate tariff is so important right now. Today, moving will only save £70, but when the caps start moving up, your fixed rate tariff will stay the same price, so you’ll be shielded from further turmoil in the energy industry over the rest of 2025.
