I am writing to draw your attention to a growing campaign calling on the Government to end the freeze on PAYE tax bands. The petition titled “Call for Labour to take less tax: UNFREEZE our PAYE tax bands” has already gathered over 6,000 signatures on Change.org, reflecting widespread frustration among ordinary working people.
This petition urges Chancellor Rachel Reeves to allow the personal allowance and higher-rate thresholds to rise in line with inflation from April 2026, rather than keeping them frozen until 2028. The ongoing freeze means that even modest pay rises are pushing millions of ordinary earners into higher tax brackets — not because they are wealthier, but because the system no longer reflects economic reality.
This situation is deeply unfair. People are already struggling with the lasting effects of inflation, rising rents and mortgages, and the ongoing cost-of-living and energy crises. When someone finally receives a pay rise, it should help them get ahead — not drag them into a higher tax band that wipes out any benefit. The tax-band freeze is effectively a stealth tax: it quietly takes more from people who are simply trying to keep their heads above water.
The petition is not about protecting the very wealthy or cutting taxes irresponsibly — it’s about fairness. It’s about ensuring that our tax system reflects real wages, not penalises ordinary people for modest progress. By keeping thresholds frozen, the Government is eroding the value of hard work and punishing ambition at a time when families need every bit of support they can get.
I am asking you, as my elected representative, to raise this issue directly with the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, and to press for a review of the current freeze on PAYE tax bands. I hope you will stand up for the principle that workers should be able to keep more of what they earn, especially as their pay merely keeps pace with inflation.
This is an opportunity for Labour to demonstrate that it understands and supports working people — those who are not wealthy, but who keep this country running.
